Aghios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos is situated in the Mirabello Gulf on the north-east side of Crete. From the early seventies the town has welcomed thousands of visitors, who keep coming back for holidays in Aghios Nikolaos.
Aghios Nikolaos is famous for it’s bottomless lake. The lake’s history is surrounded by myth. Legend has it that Athena and Artemis bathed in its waters.
“Lotus Eaters” and “Who Pays the Ferryman” are among several films made in Aghios Nikolaos.
Most beaches in Aghios Nikolaos are within walking distance and many have received the Blue Flag Award. Several are small sheltered coves and so safe for swimming even when it is windy.
On Wednesday there is outdoor market in Aghios Nikolaos, which offers local produce, handicrafts and much more.
Restaurant and bars in Aghios Nikolaos are plentiful, all serving traditional Cretan food as well as International dishes. The nightlife in Aghios Nikolaos is also very good with bars and discos, and ‘cretan nights’ with music and dancing in some tavernas around town.
